Defari Gets Even With New LP -
Feb 14, 2002 -

Likwit crew member Defari has revealed plans for a third album. After 1999's Focused Daily and a 2000 release under his Billy The Kidd alias, a third effort titled Odds and Evens is in the works.

"Odds and Evens is the name of the new album because I beat the odds and I'm about to get even." Defari told SOHH after a Washington D.C. performance with Tha Liks. "And it's also, you can pick any number and it'll suit your tastes, suit your mind."

Defari's current ABB Records single "Bionic 2" b/w "Behold My Life (feat. Dilated Peoples)" is blowing up mix shows and definitely has the former Inglewood High School world history teacher pleased. "Everywhere we go it's sold out. And that's unheard of nowadays," he said.

After spending time with both ABB and Tommy Boy, Defari is in the midst of deciding how his next album gets released. "He's like a free agent who's really trying to find the right place," explained Defari in the third person. "That's what he is right now. But that's not gonna stop him from coming out. I can't really even speak on what label he's going to come out on right now...I'm just trying to get the capital that backs my vision, whether it's a major or an indie. It doesn't matter."

Although Defari spent a good chunk of last year touring arenas with Xzibit, he's most at home rocking smaller venues with longtime fam Tha Liks. "I always have to thank X for exposing me to, and offering me an opportunity to rock in front of so many people man," he said of Xzibit, who arranged Defari's appearance on Dr. Dre's "L.A. Niggaz". "But like here tonight is the root of it. This is where I thrive the most. The summer jams with Xzibit were just a phenomenal experience, but this is my love right here, this is where it pumps. My heart, my bloodline, for my lyrics, for what I've experienced."

Executive produced by E-Swift, Odds and Evens will feature Defari himself behind the boards, along with beats from Evidence, E-Swift and Joey Chavez. Defari also listed Battlecat and Rockwilder as possible collaborators to the release that should hit stores in late 2002. Source: SoHH

Here is a big audio special for all you West Coast fans out there. For those who collect the rare music will remember songs like the Original Version of My Heat Goes Boom by the LBC Crew, Hit Rocks by Snoop Dogg or Baby Come Home by So Sentrelle. However, all those songs were left off from various albums but some of them leaked and fans got their hands on them. Those songs Ive mentioned premiered on the Theo Radio Show on 92.3 Tha Beat in December 1995. The homie Kevin was the one who ripped those songs from the radio show so thats the reason you got them today. It was a pretty tight show, the whole DPG and LBC Crew was in the studio. They premiered a bunch of songs and also did some freestyles and interviews. I got the whole thing below for you to download. This is something special for all the DPG Fans as you wont find this anywhere else but here. The whole interview including songs and freestyles is about 45 minutes long. The quality is very good and Ive split them in different files. You can download those classic songs below, untagged. On a sidenote, I bet you didnt know that the classic Dogg Pound song called Smooth was originally called Sho Shit. Well they played that song in the radio show, its almost the same version but has slightly different lyrics. Enjoy that shiznit and a shout out to Kevin for this, good lookin player. Lil Jay

Knoc Talks Debut Album - February 1, 2002 -

MTV posted a very interesting article on West Coast Rookie Knoc-Turn'al. You can read the whole thing below and if you scroll down you can see the cd cover from his upcoming debut album Knoc's Landin. Remember it drops April 23 on Elektra. His first single Knoc is gettin a lot of airplay, click here to download this video.

Newcomer Knoc-Turn'Al thinks he and Dr. Dre. might have set a hip-hop record.

"We worked 72 hours in a studio nonstop recording 'The Wash' soundtrack," Knoc-Turn'Al said last week from his record label's Los Angeles office. "I don't think we could do it again. The security guys would see me coming and say, 'Man is it going to be another one of those days?' "

Just in case that doesn't make the record books, Knoc's got another impressive feat worth boasting about.

In the three years he spent working on his debut album, Knoc's Landin', due April 23, Knoc wrote more than 300 songs.

"As we were going along, I would do 20 songs and then like drop all of them except the three that everybody felt were the hottest," he explained. "When it was all said and done, I had 30 songs [that] I had to drop down to 14. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be, but it was still kind of tedious."

Among those that made the cut is "The Knoc," his first single. Both the song and the video — directed by Jeff Richter (Black Rob, Jurassic 5) — feature Dre and Missy Elliott. Like most of the tracks on Knoc's Landin', Dre produced "The Knoc" at his studio.

"He put the beat up, and I just started writing to it that night," Knoc recalled. "It was like me letting people know I'm here and I want to talk to you. I was really trying to hold more of a conversation than anything in that song — let people get the feel that I can rap, I'm not just a hook person."

Knoc-Turn'Al, whose father was in a funk band and took him to Rick James concerts, has been rapping for as long as he can remember. He honed his skills during a four-year stretch in prison, where he wrote 150 songs, none of which appear on Knoc's Landin'.

"You have to keep moving on. Using songs you wrote three years ago is bullsh--," he said. "And I'm not trying to dig up those bones in my closet. That's not something I want to glorify. I don't want kids walking around talking about prison sh--. That's like embedding something in their minds they don't really need to hear."

Once outside of bars, Knoc hooked up with hip-hop label LA Confidential, whose CEO introduced him to Dre. Knoc made an instant impression on the hip-hop mogul and co-wrote and appeared on four songs on his Chronic 2001. He also co-wrote "Bad Intentions" and "The Wash" for "The Wash" soundtrack, Dre's "Put It On Me" for the "Training Day" soundtrack and Warren G's "Lookin' At You."

"Being from the West Coast, that's the ultimate, working with Dr. Dre," Knoc said. "He is the founder and pioneer of West Coast rap. His sound is incredible. Once I hooked up with him, it felt like home" — only more demanding. "It's always a challenge working with Dre because he does not like to be outdone in any way shape or form," he added. "He strives for perfection."

Several other artists appear on Knoc's Landin' as well, including Timbaland, Warren G, Too Short, Hitman and Slip Capone. Knoc-Turn'Al also recorded a few collaborations that didn't make the record.

"I sure hope they aren't mad at me," Knoc said, sounding genuinely concerned. "You gotta realize, not only are you cutting off songs, you're cutting off people. I just hope they don't take it personal. It's a business."

While recording his album, Knoc-Turn'Al got to know other West Coast rappers who have worked with Dre, and he's since bonded with them in a crusade to help the scene grow.

"We got a nice little foundation out here now," he said. "Instead of being all secluded, we're being more together. Like, me and Xzibit went to a club the other night. Instead of alienating ourselves from each other and saying, 'No, I wanna be closer to Dre,' 'No, I do,' like little bitches. We ain't doing that. We're holding this sh-- together."

Knoc continues to write with other artists and is talking with Nate Dogg and Fabolous about a summer tour. Mostly, though, he's just waiting for his album to come out.

"I'm getting anxiety attacks and sh--," he said.
