05/29/05 | Introducing Noelle

noelle       It's not everyday that a former female college basketball player with Final Four experience embarks on her way to not only being the tallest, but also one of the most talented singer-songwriters in the game. That's right, she writes her own songs, and has studied music since the tender age of 7.

Representing the Midwest (Lincoln, Nebraska to be exact) and then moving to Las Vegas where by the time she graduated high school she would become the Gatorade State Player of the Year, her dreams of pursuing music would be put on hold by a college scholarship acceptance to Old Dominion University. Noelle, then known on the team as "Pretty-Nikki" would make her mark off the court as well in Norfolk, Virginia, singing national anthems for sold out games, and other school events. After graduating college with a major in Human Services & Counseling with a minor in Vocal Performance, Noelle would move back to Las Vegas, singing 6 nights a week in shows on the strip.

With a need for songwriting and singing original songs, she would then take her savings earned since graduation, pack her stuff, and head to Los Angeles. In 2 years she would have a shoe sponsorship deal, song placements in television, a movie, and tons of radio play with her infamous remixes that reached not only the California market but as far as New York, southern markets, and overseas play as well. Earning the title "Queen of the Mix Tape" Noelle linked up with POWER 106's Dj Felli Fel and his production company Rock Hill. The street credible duo has already worked with Mike Jones, Pitbull, Paul Wall, and Swizz Beatz to name a few. "I like working with artists/producers that mirror myself: hungry, a hustler, go-getter, and a will-not-take-no-for-an-answer attitude," Noelle says, "I'm in this because music is my passion, my job, and my purpose. Artists that are here to create movements are the ones I'm trying to work with. God gave us all individual gifts/talents and I plan on using all of mine."

Noelle's style is raw, with a voice that is distinct but edgy, urban with a universal approach, empathic lyrics, and concepts that appeal to just about anyone. The simplicity, sexiness, and smoothness that legendary artists like Aaliyah brought is coming back through artists like Noelle, and she plans on raising the bar not only in height, but in the female artist's ability to be herself through her self-written material, style, delivery, approach, and live vocal ability. It is her niche' of being able to write to any genre and fit any collaboration and make it "work" is why Noelle's longevity will be as long as her legs…and THAT is LONG!

05/29/05 | Duece Maxwell "The Guilty Pleasure"

duece maxwell       "HIP HOP BREWED SLOW FOR A SMOOTH TASTE THAT GOES DOWN EASY".....is the perfect way to describe the sound of San Diego, CA hip hop artist Deuce Maxwell and his debut release "The Guilty Pleasure". This self-taught musician has crafted an album that exceeds all expectations of how westcoast hip hop should sound. At first glance no one would think it to be possible for one person to incorporate Funk, House, Trance, and Neo Soul on a single recording without sounding too eager to please.

Deuce Maxwell combines several genres of music without sounding experimental or losing his street appeal. The highlights on the album are spread amongst 14 tracks, one of them being the remake of "This Song is Familiar" a track originally recorded by Funk Pioneer George Clinton's band Funkadelic in the early 70's. Deuce Maxwell manages to slow the groove down just a little, and surprises listeners with a guest appearance from the original band, who assist him with vocal duties making this track an unlikely duet.
The album takes a more serious turn with the Al Green inspired track "Proverbs 6:34" which if you are familiar with its origin discusses the perils of adultery. The interesting thing about this track is that Deuce Maxwell takes on the role of the jealous lover who's crime of passion forces him to live with some serious regrets, and to top it off it's all done in less than four minutes.

Rounding out the album is the song "Tune of Sade" a smooth, plush track, with a hypnotic feel that keeps your head nodding, until you've been fully engaged into a dream state. This track embodies the soul and spirit of its namesake, as well as a hauntingly similar vocal performance that will surprise as well as satisfy your interests. The smooth delivery of Deuce Maxwell resonates throughout the entire album, ensuring him a place in the heart of women all over, thanks to his warm sensuous tone.

The album is also the first release from the newly formed Clickwest Entertainment record label and looks to be a classic recording that will lead to bigger and better things for this artist in the very near future. Do yourself a favor and pick up this artist Deuce Maxwell and his album "The Guilty Pleasure" when it hits the stores.

05/11/05 | Fat Daddy Records Finals Release Of Habitt

habitt       The long-awaited arrival of the debut album, “Talk Of The Town,” from Oakland rapper Habitt is now slated for release on May 17. His record label, the Los Angeles based Fat Daddy Records, headed by television and film actress Yvette Wilson and her husband Jerome Harry, had originally anticipated a February release, until they decided at the last minute to switch distributors. Harry explains, “We really felt it was the best decision for our label, even though it slowed down the process a bit.” He adds, “The support for the album has been incredible. The response has been amazing.”

Much has happened since initially preparing for the original February date. One of those events, however, left all involved shattered, and that was when actor Lamont Bentley was suddenly killed in a car accident. Bentley was a friend of the label, as well as a close friend of Habitt’s. Both Bentley and popular actor Ken L. had just recorded a skit with Habitt, which is on the album, and it is titled “Shakin’ It Up.” Habitt reports, “It was such a shock to lose someone who is a friend like that.” He adds, “I dedicated my album to Lamont. He was a true friend, and we all miss him a great deal.”

The Habitt van is currently making its way across the country, and is slated to hit 29 states across the country, and it gets reaction wherever it goes. Scheduled arrival dates for this next week include Oakland, Sacramento, San Francisco, Vallejo, Las Vegas and Seattle. “Ride with us,” says Habitt, inviting fans to check out his music and participate in the interactive promotional tour. “I’ve got song on the album called “Riders,” and that’s what it’s all about. Ride with us.”

Other guests on the album are label mate Black Diamond, who is scheduled for a release in 2006, the Luniz, and Knocturn’Al, who Harry used to manage. There is one more very special guest on the album, and that is Persian vocalist Aku G. Fort, who appears on the track “Hypnotize.” Her vocals are sung in Persian, as Mid East meets West Coast hiphop.

Habitt says his life has really turned around because of the album. At times, things were not so easy, he says. “I was running around in the streets when I was seventeen and got shot. It must have been meant to happen in the grand scheme of things, but I was not meant to go at that time. Somebody ran up to the car I was in and shot it all up. I was in the passenger seat in front. I just prayed that I wouldn’t get hit. It was shot in my stomach area and in my thigh, so it was very serious, and I almost died. Somehow though, like a miracle, the bullet missed all my organs. It was right below my heart.” He adds, “I wanted to change the situation, and did everything I could to turn my life around.”

Regret is expressed in his song “Lesson,” while “Strictly Game” is about using those lessons for good benefit. Habitt explains, “Everything you do is entirely about your game, and if you’re doing a good job at whatever it is you’re doing. But without game, you can’t have anything in life.” Early critical response has also given a nod to tracks like “N From The O” and the indelible “Cross Me Border.” Habitt says that one of his personal favorites on the album is “Street Life,” which he notes is an autobiographical portrait.

The current single “Pick It Up” has received great reaction from record pools across the country, and as one DJ aptly noted, “That’s it for the album, too. Pick it up, because it’s well worth it.”

paper 05/02/05 | DJ QUIK READIES NEW MIXTAPE "TRAUMA"!
dj quik
DJ Quik is prepping for the national release of his "Trauma" mixtape, which will set the stage for the new album that Quik will be releasing later this year on his own Mad Science Recordings. The "Trauma" mixtape features five new tracks and also traces DJ Quik's remarkable history by including hits from his decade-plus recording and producing career. Eagerly anticipated by mixtape DJs around the world, "Trauma" also marks the first time an artist will be mixing and hosting his own mixtape. Only 10,000 copies of the limited edition mixtape, which features artwork from renowned tattoo artist Mr. Cartoon, will be pressed up.

The impending release of the "Trauma" mixtape and Quik’s new album come on the heels of a flurry of activity for the Compton-raised rap icon. Quik recently toured Europe as part of the current The Game/Snoop Dogg tour. During The Game’s set, Quik served as DJ. For Snoop Dogg’s performance, Quik played percussion, making the outing a showcase for Quik’s extraordinary DJ skills and his musicianship. DJ Quik’s musical resume includes such landmark hits as "Tonite" and "Trouble," as well as his production work with 2Pac, Jay-Z, Chingy and Talib Kweli, among many others. His forthcoming album is another masterpiece.

"This record is magical," explains DJ Quik, "it has tons of air. You won’t feel claustrophobic with this record because there is not a ceiling. This record is as expansive as the universe, but yet as confined as a CD."

Highlights on DJ Quik’s new album include lead single "Fandango," which features B-Real from Cypress Hill and marks the first time these two rap revolutionaries have worked together. The cathartic "Intro For Roger," the edgy, party-starting "Ladies-N-Thugs" with Wyclef Jean and the sexy "She Pass By" with Nate Dogg are some of the collection’s other standout cuts. Each song reaches the highest level of musical and lyrical expertise.

So with "Trauma", get ready for the triumphant return of DJ Quik!!! And make sure you check right back later here on Westcoast2k for the track "Fandango"!

All in all it's a well rounded video and the storyline has been brought to life very well, from Game getting shot to seeing Mya's ass on the front of that King. Everything is in there, so watch it right now by downloading it below:
