paper 03/31/05 | Introducing One-2
one-2
Treacherous Records signee One-2 is putting the finishing touches on his upcoming mixtape "High School Drop Out" due out in April. The West Coast Rapper was first heard on the Crooked I "Young Boss" mixtape on the track "Phony". One-2 was also featured on singer K Young's album "Learn How To Love" which came out earlier this month on Treacherous. He appeared on the song "Together".

The "High School Drop Out" mixtape is a perfect showcase for One-2's lyrical agility and his ability to rap over a variety of beats. A good example are songs like "Death To Yall", where he goes from spittin' over a darker beat, to something like the title track "High School Drop Out" featuring Big Syke. The mixtape comes with more guest appearances from labelmates Knoc-Turn'al & Jayo Felony.

"With my mixtape, I really didn't want to do a lot of conceptual songs. It's almost like I'm venting. It's got all the fire I've kept in me all this time. When the album comes, it's going to be more laid-back. Now that I've let you feel me, you understand me and I've got your attention, let me tell you a story. It's going to be poetry over beautiful beats." One-2 says.

True to his word, One-2's forthcoming debut album, tentatively titled Buy My Story, is a heartfelt collection, with inventive song concepts and subject matter and production that is entertaining and catchy. One-2 came up with the title of his album for a variety of reasons. "When you tell someone a story and they don't believe it, they say, 'I don't buy that,'" One-2 says. "I'm telling people to buy my story because what I'm giving you is the truth, the facts of my life. Also, I'm saying to head to the record store and get something hot and something new."

paper 03/26/05 | R.I.P. Eric "Eazy E" Wright
rip eazy e       March 26 marks the 10th anniversary of Eazy-E's death. I can't believe its already been 10 years... I wanna say R.I.P. to the original godfather of gangsta rap, he will always be in our hearts.

Check out this little video tribute remembering Eazy put together by YahooMusic. Go back in time and watch the classic videos for some of his biggest hits such as "Eazy-er Said Than Dunn", "Just Tah Let U Know", or "Real Compton City G's". Click here to see.

In related news, Bushwick Bill of The Geto Boys is scheduled to tour with Bone Thugs N Harmony in dedication to Eazy E. Here is the full press release:

On the eve of the release of his solo album, “Gutta Mixx,” on Dollars-N-Cents/Adex/Lightyear/WEA, Bushwick Bill of The Geto Boys is pleased to announce that he will be going on a major concert tour with the Grammy-winning Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony.
The first three confirmed dates and venues on the tour will be as follows: On May 5, Robert Stadium in Evansville, IN, on May 6, the Delta Plex in Grand Rapids, MI, and on May 7, the U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, WI. At press time, more dates are being added, which will be announced at a later date.

Bushwick Bill states that he wanted to announce the tour at a time that would coincide with of ten-year anniversary of the death of Eric “Eazy-E” Wright, so that he could kick off the tour by dedicating it in the late rapper’s memory. Bill observes, “The passing of Eazy-E reminds me of a time, back years ago, when controversy was what ruled hiphop, because people were daring to push the envelope, and that is what made ‘gangsta rap’ prominent. Since Eazy has been gone, very few artists or record companies have had the nerve or the courage to push the envelope, to make statements against the brutality of the police, or to express how they see the government treating people who live in the ghetto. The time was so important, because people like Eazy—E and James Prince threw down, and these are two people that dared to push the envelope. That is part of why the Geto Boys came back with an album called “The Foundation.” Eazy put out groups that struck intrigue in you, where you didn’t just want to hear the music; you wanted to know what was behind it.

Bone Thugs-N-Harmony approached rap with hardcore lyrics and melodic speech in how they brought their messages across, using the harmony of R&B to make it a crossroads of hiphop, R&B and jazz. For Eazy to bring someone into the game that could sing and rap at the same time, that was controversial back then.”

Bushwick notes, “I look forward to the next ten years in hiphop, and to see what Eric’s sons are going to do, and who is going to be the next person to come out and push the envelope. Eazy-E was special, not just because he was a great entrepreneur, a solo artist, and because of what he did with NWA, but also because he was a pioneer who spoke his mind. He let everyone on his label express himself freely, because he held up the Constitution. Unlike many today still, he believed that we have the right to free speech, and he carried that torch all the way to the grave, and it’s still burning now, like an ever-burning light. That’s what I learned from Eazy-E. I miss him, and I am still curious about what he would have to say about the world as it is today.”

Bill concludes, “As far as a lot of the music from some of these so-called ‘gangsta’ rappers, who are coming today with this bubble gum rap that is taking over the airwaves, I think a few of the rappers like Eazy-E and some of our other musical forefathers who came before him, are wondering why are we not using our opportunities to speak about the problems that are going on, instead of just talking about having a good time.”

paper 03/09/05 | Game & 50 Cent Make Up
50 cent & game       Witness the last chapter in the Game/50 Cent feud today:

Perhaps selling 1.1 million copies of his new album in four days has softened the heart of 50 Cent. Or maybe he has so many feuds going, he can afford to let one go. Today 50 Cent and The Game publicly squashed a bitter feud that had erupted into gunfire last week after 50 kicked Game out of his G-Unit clique for disloyalty. The two platinum-selling gangsta rappers didn't exactly kiss and make up. When they emerged before a media throng at Harlem's famed Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, both looked as if they'd been shoved into apologies by a stern mother. But they did shake hands, albeit at the end of the press conference, after speaking about contrition and the need for peace. 50 noted that Wednesday was the anniversary of the unsolved murder of Biggie Smalls in 1997, the culmination of a rap war between Biggie and Tupac Shakur that pitted East Coast against West.

"We're here today to show that people can rise above the most difficult circumstances and together we can put negativity behind us," said 50. "A lot of people don't want to see it happen, but we're responding to the two most important groups, our family and our fans."

"I just want to apologize on behalf of myself and 50," said Game. "I'm almost ashamed to have participated in the things that happened in the last couple of weeks."

50 presented an oversized check for $150,000 to the Boys Choir of Harlem. Game donated $103,500. It was not clear why Game chose that amount or whether he had been reinstated in G-Unit; no questions were taken at the press conference. They also both made contributions to the Compton schools music program.

You can check out complete coverage of 50 and Game's press conference on "Direct Effect" tonight at 7 p.m. ET.

On that note, I would like to send out my prayers to Biggie & his family, rather than comment on these beefs. Today marks the 8 year anniversary of his death. R.I.P. to one of the biggest legends Hip Hop has ever seen.

paper 03/09/05 | DJ Quik Radio Drops (Audio)
dj quik       Here are some of those old DJ Quik radio drops from back in the day which Quik talked about in our interview that we did with him. They were heavily requested after the interview was posted so here are some of those drops, which are, in my personal opinion, some of best Quik tracks ever recorded (unfortunately not all in CD Quality since they were never properly released).

» DJ Quik & Mausberg - Realizm (Julio G Drop)
» Mausberg Freestyle on The Beat
» DJ Quik - Way Too Fonky Radio Drop feat. Suga Free, Hi-C, 2swift
» DJ Quik - Everyday Thing (92.3 The Beat Drop For Theo)
» DJ Quik - A Bedtime Story (Theo Drop) feat. Suga Free
» DJ Quik & AMG - 92.3 Tha Beat Drop (Theo's Theme)
» DJ Quik - Another Afternoon Drive (92.3 The Beat Drop For Theo)

And the last one is probably the best one of them all, Dj Quik's personal re-twist of The Roots classic "What We Do". Gotta love the special West Coast flavor he added with the talkbox.

» DJ Quik & Suga Free - What We Do (Foreplay At 4 Drop)

Also, here is a lil somthing for the collectors out there. It is an different version of King T's "Let's Make A V" with a never before heard intro from DJ Quik & outro from King T (followed by "The Chron", the album's next song).

» King Tee - Lets Make A V (w/ Intro & Outro) feat. DJ Quik & Frost

Last but not least something that I came across a while ago, its the video of the DJ Quik produced Theme for the BET show "Live From L.A.". I never understood how both the video and tight song passed by unnoticed for a lot of people with an all star cast like Quik, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, and Ice Cube on the same joint. They aired this the first time the show premiered, so if you've never seen this video before make sure you download it below. This was ripped/hosted by "GFonk" so all the credits go to him.

paper 03/01/05 | Game / 50 Cent Article
game       Here is the new article taken from MTV regarding the Game / 50 Cent situation which seems to have escalated:

50 Drops Game From G-Unit; Shots Fired At Radio Station

One man was wounded in a shooting at New York's Hot 97 Monday night (February 28) just as 50 Cent was making an appearance at the radio station to announce that the Game had been booted from the G-Unit. Police said a man in his 20s from Los Angeles [Editors note: A member of The Blackwallstreet] was shot in the left leg during an altercation at the station and was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital. The injury was not serious, and the victim is expected to fully recover.

An NYPD spokesperson offered no additional details about the incident, and initial reports differ as to whether the young man was affiliated with 50 and his entourage. New York's FOX affiliate reports that the rapper and his crew were escorted from the building via alternate exits following the shooting and escaped harm.

The shooting occurred while 50 was appearing on Funkmaster Flex's show, where he told the DJ that the Game had been excommunicated from G-Unit because he feels the Compton rapper isn't loyal.

50 told Flex he was disappointed with comments Game made on the station Saturday night, when the West Coast MC revealed he would not be getting involved in the beefs 50 is stirring up with "Piggy Bank".

According to Flex, Game even said he was going to do a song with Nas. "He's gone," 50 scoffed. "He might as well make the record."

50 also said Game should stop saying "G-Unit." "He thinks he's doing me a favor when he says that.

During his conversation with Flex, 50 claimed Interscope was going to drop the Game until 50 stepped in and got involved with The Documentary. 50 also insisted that he's making more money off The Documentary than Game is, and that he wrote more choruses than he's credited for.

Believe it or not, Game was on Hot 97 earlier in the evening, talking to host Angie Martinez. When listeners called in to ask about his and 50's problems, Game simply said he was going to continue to make "good music." Two nights prior, Game had said on-air that he and 50 did not have to be friends as long as they worked toward that same common goal: making good music.
